Fr. DAVID POWER, O.M.I.

On Thursday, June 19, 2014 of Washington, DC. David Noel Power, O.M.I. was born in Dublin, Ireland on December 14, 1932. His parents were David Power and Kathleen Davis. He made his novitiate in Ireland in 1950 and his perpetual vows in 1954. He was ordained in Rome in 1956. He obtained his doctorate in theology from the Anselmianum Liturgical Institute in 1968. He taught theology in Ireland, the Oblate seminary and at Maynooth, the diocesan seminary for some years. He also taught at the Gregorian University in Rome.

In 1977 he began his career as a Professor of theology at the Catholic University of America. During his tenure at the University he was appointed the Shakespeare Caldwell Dave Distinguished professor and subsequently became the Chair of the theology department. He was elected as president of the North American Academy of Religion. He has lectured throughout the United States and Canada as well as Ireland, South Africa, the Philippines and Zaire.

In 1998, David was honored with the John Courtney Murray award for excellence in the field of theological scholarship. He taught in the diocesan seminary in Tahiti and more recently in the Oblate seminary in Zambia. He has authored numerous scholarly books in the field of liturgical theology and many articles in various theological publications. He was a member of the editorial board of Concilium, a post Conciliar publication.

Upon returning to the United States from Zambia David was in treatment for cancer for a period of two years.

Also survived by seven great-grandchildren and his brothers James and Ted Jarboe. Mr. Jarboe had highly distinguished careers with both the Takoma Park Volunteer Fire Department as well as the United States Air Force. Passed away, peacefully, on Tuesday, June 17, 2014, at her home in Rockville, MD. Born in Pittsburgh, PA on June 27, 1944, Michele came to the Washington, DC area in 1967 to work for the General Accounting Office. She left the Federal Government in 1981 to become a full-time mother and homemaker. Michele became very active in sports activities and in her community at Manor Country Club where she held numerous chairmanships. She enjoyed musicals, opera, bridge, golf and had a passion for crossword puzzles. Michele will be sadly missed by her husband of 39 years, Michael W. O’Neill; daughter, Jennifer O’Neill Mears; stepsons, Michael W. O’Neill, Jr., Collin M. O’Neill; stepdaughter, Stacy O’Neill Pollock; six grandchildren, PJ, Vinnie, Ava, Charlie, Carly and Louie; as well as her many friends. “Jack”

John Joseph (Jack) McNerney, 85, of Sunrise, Florida, passed away on June 13, 2014. The son of the late Arthur and Louise McNerney, he was born October 14, 1928 in Washington D.C. Jack lived in Silver Spring, Maryland with his wife of 58 years, Monica, until three years ago when they moved to Florida. Monica, the love of Jack’s life, passed away in November of 2013. Jack received both his Bachelor’s Degree and Master’s Degree in Civil Engineering from The Catholic University of America. Jack was a Registered Professional Engineer and was a member of the American Concrete Institute and the American Society for Testing and Materials. He spent twenty years as an engineer with the George Hyman Construction Company (now the Clark Construction Group) after spending fourteen years with the National Brick and Supply Company where he served as Vice President of Engineering and Production. He was actively involved with his four sons in Troop 1444 of the Boy Scouts of America and was a dedicated member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and uncle, Jack selflessly placed the needs of his family ahead of all else. He was constantly at his wife’s side, lovingly attending to her needs as her chronic illness resulted in progressive disability. Jack is survived by his children, Jack McNerney, Jr. and wife, Katrina, of Tucson, Arizona; Karen Hill and husband Jim, of Pittsford, New York; Neal McNerney and wife Rose Ann of Pembroke Pines, Florida, Mark McNerney and wife, Meredith, of Ijamsville, Maryland; Steve McNerney and wife, Ronya, of Frederick, Maryland; grandchildren Nikki, Monica, Steffi, Kelly, Alex, Natalie, Meghan, Danielle, Kaitlyn, and Ryan; brother Judge Thomas McNerney and wife, Ruth, of Jacksonville, Florida, and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and wife, Jack was preceded in death by his brother, Arthur McNerney. MCPO (SS) Kenneth William Weit, USN (RET), Died peacefully at home on June 18th with his wife at his side.

Ken was born in Hershey, Pennsylvania, 25th of June 1942 to Violet Mae Waltz and George Edwin Weit.

He joined the Navy in 1960 with the thought of spending eight years in service, instead he went on to retire after 20 years. He took training for the submarine service and schooling as a machinist mate.

His first boat was USS Corsair, then came USS Diablo, USS Tecumseh, USS Marshall, and USS Daniel Boone.

After retirement Ken spent a lot of time sailing aboard his sail boat DIABLO and just enjoyed life. Ken was a passionate sailor and enjoyed sailing the great lakes, the Mississippi River, and the waters around Florida. He also sailed all 24 miles of Lock Ness, Scotland.

He and his wife Joan lived on their sail boat ‘ISLAND IN THE SUN’ for several years . After moving on land, they would spend four months each summer living aboard and sailing the Potomac River and the Chesapeake Bay .

Ken is survived by his wife Joan Weit and sister Mary Gish of Palmyra, PA. He is also survived by four children from his prior marriage to Virginia Mills, of Shalimar, Florida. Daughters Brenda Harbold, Mechanicsville, MD., Tracy Klippert of Fresno, CA., Wendy Wylie of Ruffin, NC., and son Brian Weit of Lititz, PA.

He is survived by four step sons. Stephen Savage of Daphne, Ala, John Figliozzi, Sterling, Va., George Figliozzi, Arlington, Va., and Thomas Figliozzi.

In addition, he is survived by eleven grand children and one great, grandchild.

Memorial service and interment private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Ken’s favorite charity, Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Box 758517, Topeka, KS 66675.
